AdCommerce Takes on Ecommerce Summit

April 19th, 2010

Last week we had the chance to spend several days meeting eBay sellers at the PESA/ECMTA Ecommerce Summit in Las Vegas. We learned a lot about what sellers are looking for in their pay-per-click advertising and got some great insights into how we can help more in the future. It’s always nice to meet in person and hear firsthand about your businesses, how you’re using AdCommerce, what’s working and where you’d like to have more support.

Our team will be going over your feedback in the coming weeks, so please keep it coming! You can contact us directly or follow us on Twitter (www.twitter.com/ebayadcommerce) and engage with us there.

If you were with us in Vegas, we hope you were able to catch the panel appearance by Alexis Van De Wyer, director of advertising for AdCommerce. Alexis talked about ways to better manage pay-per-click campaigns, and he offered tips to help sellers be more effective with their advertising, including three things to consider as you’re getting started:

  1. Know your objectives: Think about whether you want to drive traffic to your store, your listings, by category, by product, etc.
  2. Set your budget: Know what makes sense for your margins. Our ROI Reporting can help, because you can see exactly what you’re getting out of the dollars you’re investing and make changes accordingly.
  3. Choose keywords carefully: Spend time finding the most relevant keywords for your business. Consider what words you use in your listings and be specific. If you need more help, consult the AdCommerce wizard for suggestions.

Here are some pictures from the ECommerce Summit – Enjoy!

Join Us at Ecommerce Summit Next Week

April 8th, 2010

Next Tuesday, April 13, we’re heading out to Vegas for the Ecommerce Summit 2010, a great event for anyone who sells online. The conference is put on at the Flamingo Hotel & Casino by PeSA and the Ecommerce Merchants Trade Association, April 13-15.  They’ve organized a solid agenda of educational speakers and sessions, including a panel entitled, “Managing Your Pay-Per-Click Campaigns for Success,” which features our own Alexis Van De Wyer, director of advertising for eBay AdCommerce.

You might have gone into business for any number of reasons, but we’re guessing that learning how to advertise wasn’t one of them. Alexis and his co-panelist will break this down for you, offering tips and best practices to help you get your ad campaigns performing beyond your expectations. PeSA Australia founder and president Phil Leahy – eBay Australia’s No. 1 seller in 2007 and 2008 – will be moderating. The panel takes place at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, in the Community room.

We’ll also have a team there to meet and talk with current and potential AdCommerce partners, so please stop by and see us! We’ll be heading over to the cocktail reception at the Harley-Davidson Cafe from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, and throughout the show we’ll be in booth #20 in the solution hall. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Upcoming Optimization Webinar April 6 – Don’t Miss It!

April 5th, 2010

Our next webinar is quickly approaching!  If you’d like to find out how to get the most out of your AdCommerce ads, join us for “Get Results: Optimizing Your AdCommerce Campaigns” on Tuesday, April 6, at 11 a.m. PT/ 2 p.m. ET. You can sign up for the webinar here.

While it’s easy to get started with AdCommerce, it’s not always easy to figure out what works best with any type of advertising, and what could be changed. That’s where we come in, and that’s the idea behind this webinar. During the session we’ll be providing detailed instruction, optimization tips and best practices to help you become a more efficient and effective advertiser on eBay.

Our new ROI Reporting feature, which compares how ads are performing with how much an advertiser is spending, will be explored in more detail. Of course, you’re always welcome to visit our enhanced Help content for more ROI best practices to learn more about this new tool.

Hope to see you at the webinar!

Meeting Sellers at eBay On Location

March 30th, 2010

Earlier this month, we had the opportunity to join about 500 eBay sellers in Atlanta for the first of four eBay On Location events. On Location is THE conference extraordinaire for the eBay seller, designed to provide all the right tips, tools and strategies needed to grow a successful eBay business. There are three events left, so if you missed this one, be sure to check out one of the others. Upcoming dates and locations include:

  • Dallas, TX May 7-8
  • Chicago, IL July 9-10
  • San Jose, CA September 1-2

The event had a great speaker lineup (think Duct Tape Marketing and The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur), various training classes, live demos and a top-rated seller panel discussion.  The same great content is planned for the upcoming events. If you’re an eBay seller, you won’t want to miss the one in your area.

The best part, of course, is that the AdCommerce team will be there! We’ll have a booth in the sponsor area, so please come by and meet us. If you’re already using AdCommerce, we’d love to hear how it’s going. If you’re considering trying it out, we can chat about how AdCommerce can help grow your business, share a demo or even sign you up to jump start your sales.

In Atlanta, we really enjoyed getting to know some of our customers better. We got a lot of great feedback from sellers who have tried AdCommerce and those who hadn’t but wanted to learn more. It was a great opportunity for us to meet many of you face-to-face and answer any questions you had, and we look forward to doing it again in Dallas, Chicago and San Jose.

ROI Reporting Webinar, and Your Questions Answered

March 16th, 2010

We were glad to see so many of you turn out last week for the first webinar on our ROI Reporting feature.   We hope the information we covered helped you become more familiar with this new tool, and you’re on your way to becoming an even more efficient and effective advertiser!

If you’d like to take another look at the webinar or if you weren’t able to make it, you can check out the webinar here.

Now, for your questions…

While we were able to take many of your questions, we realize this is a great deal of new information. We’d like to take this opportunity to go back over your questions and answer any we missed. We’ve included a detailed Q&A below. If you have additional questions you’re welcome to check out our help page or contact us here

Q:  How can the new ROI reporting help me manage my AdCommerce campaigns?

A:  ROI reporting gives you insight into what’s working for you, and what isn’t.  It helps you make decisions about how to most effectively focus your advertising spending.  Now you have the insight to expand your efforts and optimize your spend to focus on keywords that work, and cut out the keywords that aren’t profitable for you.

Q:  Why can’t I see sales results immediately?

A:  Two reasons.  You won’t see anything right away because reporting lags a few hours.  Second, the window of time that sales events may be associated to a click is the industry standard 30 days. For example, if a user clicked on an ad on Tuesday, March 9, and then made a purchase with you on April 8, that sale would be counted toward the click on March 9.  This is why it’s important to take a 30+ day historical view of your account; all of today’s sales won’t be reported until 30 days from now.

Q:  How do I know if the ROI I have is good?

A:  Each advertiser has to determine this for him or herself.  If your ROI (sales/cost ratio) is less than 1.0, you need some optimization within your account because you’re paying more for the ads than they are generating in gross sales.  You have to determine whether an ROI of 2.0 or 5.0 or 10.0 is the minimum acceptable ROI for you, based on the advertised product’s costs (the wholesale cost of the product, plus your other seller fees, etc.).

Q:  What is the BID/BIN column for, and why does it matter for ROI?

A:  BID means the number of bids generated on your auctions.  BIN means the number of times an ad click led a user to click “Buy It Now.”  While BIN activity is easily measured (it’s the sales price received as a result of the ad click), the BID number is not as easily assigned a value.  Both BID/BIN together illustrate how effectively your advertising is working for you.  Driving ad clicks to your auctions means more bids and a higher closing price.  You’re exposing your auctions to users who may not have otherwise found them – thereby driving up demand.

Q:  I looked at my ROI and it is not meeting my objectives.  What should I do?

A:  Don’t panic and delete or cancel your campaigns – just pause them. (This will preserve the historical data.)  Finding the right balance will involve some experimentation. Review the help section on ROI and implement changes to your campaigns to improve performance.  If you need additional help, you can e-mail customer service. We’ll be hosting an Optimization webinar in April, so look for that announcement here on the blog, and join us.

Q:  Does the ROI report display which items were sold through AdCommerce?

A:  AdCommerce reporting does not identify specific purchases.  Once a user clicks on your ad, a sale is counted when the user buys anything from you – not necessarily the item featured in your ad.  For example, if your ad displays on the keyword “watches” and a user clicks, but she ends up buying earrings, a sale is counted and reported for keyword “watches.”

Q:  How far does the ROI data go back?

A:  Six months.

Q:  What is the best way to reach Ad Commerce for one-on-one consulting?

A:  Send us your inquiry here.

Q:  Will this work on all eBay platforms, or just eBay.com?

A:  ROI Reporting has been released to all AdCommerce customers worldwide.  You can create specific campaigns to target users in the following countries:  Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.

Q:  Is there any way we can access our AdCommerce account from our eBay account (My eBay)?

A:  Not at this time, but we are working on ways to more seamlessly integrate your advertising with your eBay selling activities.  For now, you must maintain a separate AdCommerce account and log in at http://www.adcommerce.com/

Q:  I was having technical difficulties during the webinar. Will you email the PowerPoint?

A:  While we are unable to distribute the presentation file, you may view an archive of the webinar here.

Q:  Are AdCommerce ads distributed to third party sites?

A:  Not at this time.  We are exploring “syndication” opportunities so that in the future your AdCommerce ads will enjoy increased reach.

Q:  Is there any way we can set up e-mail in our AdCommerce account so that I would receive an automatic e-mail containing my campaign report?

A:  Not at this time.  You’ll need to log in at http://www.adcommerce.com  and click on the “reports” tab.  From there, you can download text or Excel versions of your data for analysis.

Q:   Is there any way we can find out from which region customers are coming?

A:  This data is not tracked.  However, you can safely assume that if you are running a campaign in France and your ad text is in French, you are most likely reaching your desired target audience.

Q:  For those buyers who made purchases, will I have access to their usernames?

A:  No.  AdCommerce reporting does not identify specific purchases or purchasers.

Q:  Why do you say that results might not happen until 30 days later?  It seems to me that a sale would either happen right away, or not at all.

A:  It is true that the majority of sales will be made immediately after an ad click.  However, some users choose to shop around more before making a purchase.  They typically bookmark your page and come back later.  eBay uses the industry standard 30-day “click to sale” measurement to accurately attribute sales to an ad click.

Q:  ROI is currently tracking bids and purchases.  Will it ever track customer inquiries, so we see how many users asked a question on the item?

A:  Good suggestion. We are evaluating this and it may become a part of the product at a later date.

AdCommerce to start providing eBay sales data to all AdCommerce users – Increasing Transparency for Advertisers

February 22nd, 2010

Great news!  Last year we started providing some advertisers with sales conversion metrics for AdCommerce, a great new feature that provides data on eBay bids and sales that occur as a result of ad clicks.  Based on encouraging early results, we’re happy to announce that on Monday, March 8, 2010, we will roll out Return on Investment (ROI) reporting to all AdCommerce advertisers.

Along with these new reports, we will be providing sellers with education webinars and user guides to help sellers make the best use of the new reports.  The initial webinar is scheduled for March 9, 2010 to help everyone fully understand the tool and learn how to become more efficient with their AdCommerce campaign.

More data, more transparency

One of our biggest priorities is to provide sellers with the tools they need to be more successful, and the ROI tool does just that.  ROI reports allow users to see the amount of sales their ads are generating compared with the amount they are spending, providing clear insight into ad campaign performance.  This information is intended to help advertisers better optimize their AdCommerce campaign to generate even more sales with eBay!

Our beta testers are reporting excellent results.  Seeing their ROI data has allowed them to determine which campaigns are working best and invest further in more targeted and higher performing campaigns.

For example, Jonathan Ocasio, founder of CanCrafts has told us:  “Once we were able to see our Return on Investment, we were ecstatic!  We started in November 7th and our sales [have] been increasing exponentially ever since!  Once I was able to see the positive impact AdCommerce did for my ROI, I increased our maximum daily budget from $5 to $200.  Now, I want to find ways to further optimize my campaign through AdCommerce so I can spend and make even more money.”

And from Jeff Chun of Personalization Mall: “We’ve started with AdCommerce at the end of September 2009 and our ROI has been close to 1000% – which is absolutely outstanding for us!”

How It Works

We will host a webinar on March 9, 2010 to demo the ROI feature and answer any questions, along with a follow-up webinar shortly after to review how to optimize your campaign for greater ROI.

In the meantime, here’s a quick snapshot of how this works:  When a buyer clicks an ad, AdCommerce tracks the buyer’s activities for 30 days.  If the user places a bid or buys an item after clicking on the AdCommerce ad placement, that bid or sale is displayed in your ROI metrics.  For the purpose of ROI calculations, user transactions are correlated to the last ad they clicked on before making the transaction.

What’s Next

Don’t forget to attend the webinar on March 9, 2010.  We’ll post more details on timing in the next few days.  This will give you all the basics you’ll need to know about ROI to start optimizing and selling more on eBay.

You can also visit our enhanced Help content for more ROI best practices to learn more about this new tool.  And as always, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

We’re very excited to be able to offer this feature and can’t wait to see the positive impact it has on your sales.  Happy Selling!

Attention AdCommerce Advertisers: Invoices received on February 8th, 2010 are incorrect

February 10th, 2010

We would like to inform all AdCommerce advertisers that the invoices sent out on February 8, 2010 are incorrect.  The charges accrued for clicks in the month of January 2010 were not accounted for in your initial invoice.  We will be processing an adjusted invoice for all accounts in a few days.  Automatic payments that are typically withdrawn on the 18th of the month will be delayed a few days this month to adjust for the invoicing error.  For all customers who have a payment method with AdCommerce, no further action is needed.  We will automatically withdraw the full amount owed for January 2010.  If you are making a one-time payment for the amount due, please reference the adjusted invoice.

We appreciate your business and apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.
